PCYC club racing is actively supporting the development of more women as skippers and crew. We have a number of programs to help encourage women to learn to sail, participate in cruising and racing, and improve their confidence.
Club Racing: Women on the Helm (WOTH) Series
COME JOIN US
The PCYC Women on the Helm (WOTH) racing series is held as a ‘race within a race’ as part of the Monday night ‘B’ series.
The WOTH series is arranged so that couples who plan to share the helm can alternate races between the ‘A’ and ‘B’ series.
Katie Nicoll Coleman will be available after most races to answer questions about rules, etc.
Prizes will be awarded at the annual Awards banquet.
ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY
The PCYC Women on the Helm Monday Night Race is open to all boats registered for the PCYC Monday night racing series.
The rules and regulations for the Monday night race series will apply to WOTH with the following exception:
A woman is required on the helm at the start and finish of the race and around all marks.
The woman does not have to be the female skipper of record. Crew can be mixed.
Women planning to race in WOTH races should contact Anne Sanderson: sandersonam@outlook.com
J24 Racing Monday Nights
The club's fleet of J24s is available for women racers to come out and crew on. Spots are limited for a modest fee, and registration is required.
Please contact Tristan Bourelle to find out more.
Spinnaker Training
Through the month of June or July we are offering a spinnaker training course Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 pm for a very modest cost on the club owned J24s.
The intent is for women to get more comfortable using the spinnaker in general, however the course is also open to men.
For those interested in doing so, they can advance to the Wednesday night series.
Please contact Tristan Bourelle to find out more.
Women on the Water Racing Event
The second annual Women on the Water ("WOW") event is set to happen in September on Saturday the 9th. To register and to learn more, click here!
Women's Dinghy Training
Learn to Sail is offering sail training on the double handed Club 420s on Wednesday evenings.
The program runs in for four (4) week blocks through July and August, every Wednesday from 6pm-9pm
Each night will consist of a short land lesson followed by an on-water session. A drink ticket will be included for each participant, per night.
The group will meet afterward at the clubhouse for a social gathering.
Dinghy sailing is a fantastic way to learn to sail. Small and responsive, these boats are fast, exciting and a great work-out. With an experienced Sail Canada instructor as your coach, you will develop the fundamental concepts of balance, propulsion & direction as well as the knowledge required to safely sail a dinghy in moderate wind and sea conditions.
