Port Credit Yacht Club's Harbour Crew Goes Electric

The mornings sound different at Port Credit Yacht Club this season. Where a diesel lift once rattled the yard awake, boats now rise off the water in near silence, carried by a 40-ton electric lift that the Harbour Crew learned to run before most members even noticed the change. It is a small shift in sound with a big story behind it, and it starts with the team that has been hauling boats out of this harbour, one way or another, for ninety years.

The Team That Keeps the Docks Running

Led by Harbourmaster Mike Simec, PCYC's Harbour Staff handle the parts of the Club most members only see in passing, mooring, lift services, storage, and the daily upkeep of hundreds of floating docks that rise and fall with the lake. Every one of those docks carries its own water and power pedestal, checked and maintained through a full season of wear, wind, and Lake Ontario weather. Mast stepping and unstepping happens by appointment at the Club's mast crane, operated by Harbour staff only, precise work timed around wind, weather, and a full schedule of boats waiting their turn. Multiply that by hundreds of launches and haul-outs every year, plus winter storage for the entire fleet once the season ends, and the job starts to look less like maintenance and more like choreography.

Canada's First All-Electric Marine Lift Calls Port Credit Home

This year, that choreography got a serious upgrade. PCYC replaced its old 30-ton diesel lift with a new 40-ton, fully electric model built by Kropf Industrial, the first lift of its kind in the country. ?Kropf has very much been a trusted partner for us in our long-term capital projects,? says Commodore Lisa McKay. ?We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of the development of the new lift.? The result is faster launches, quieter mornings in the yard, and zero diesel emissions or spill risk, a genuinely new piece of equipment operated by the same crew who have been hauling boats out of this harbour for decades.
