New Member Orientation at Port Credit Yacht Club

The blue gift bags go first, one to a name tag, set out on a table under the stone fireplace where the Club's burgee hangs above the front hall. By the time the group photo happens an hour later, most of the strangers in that room are trading phone numbers. Port Credit Yacht Club runs a New Member Orientation each season, and it is usually the first place a new member's PCYC story starts.

What Happens at Orientation

The session runs about two hours, favourite beverage included, and it is built to answer the questions a first-timer only discovers once they are already in the room. Staff walk the group through how the Club operates, the Commodore and Vice Commodores, the Board of Directors, the committees, and the communication channels members use to stay in the loop. There is a full explanation of the Navigators' Group and how joining a committee or working group is one of the fastest ways to meet people, a connection that goes well beyond paying dues. The evening ends with a guided tour of the clubhouse, the grounds, and the docks, so every new member's first walk to their slip follows a route they have already walked once.

The Navigators, Where New Members Find Their People

Ask a longtime member how they got to know people at PCYC, and the Navigators' Group comes up constantly. It is a volunteer-led community running euchre nights, trivia, a speaker series, a book club, regalia, and fundraising, the kind of low-key, recurring events where a new member becomes a familiar face fast. The Club's winter skating rink started as a Navigators idea. It is proof that the group that runs a Tuesday night euchre table can also build something the whole Club skates on by January.
